Prof. Dr. Siegfried Weischenberg was appointed to the Chair in Journalism and Communication Studies at the University of Hamburg in 2000. Prior to that, he worked for more than 20 years as a professor at the Universities of Dortmund and Münster. He conceptualized and led numerous research projects, among them the representative study “Journalism in Germany”. The core areas of his teaching and research are media and society, journalism (also) from an internationally comparative perspective, political communication, news production and the didactics of journalism education. As a visiting professor, he has taught at Indiana University (USA), the University of Stellenbosch (South Africa), Moscow Lomonosov University and the University of Munich, among others. He has also given lectures on journalism, freedom of the press, media ethics and political communication in many countries. As the federal chairman of the German Journalists Association (DJV), he worked together with the International Federation of Journalists to ensure and develop press freedom in Eastern Europe and Africa in particular.
 
Dr. Steffen Burkhardt is Director of the International Media Center Hamburg (IMCH). He researches and teaches with a focus on media sociology, social media, privacy and public sphere. His current research includes the transformation of privacy in consequence of the internationalization and digitalization of the media. Dr. Burkhardt is a founding member of the Chinese-German Media Ambassador Program (www.medienbotschafter.com) in cooperation with Tsinghua University, and associated with numerous international organizations and think tanks. He is a member of the selection committee of the German National Academic Foundation and several trusts to promote press freedom, human rights, and democracy. As a reviewer, among other things, the social scientist works for the European Union. Dr. Burkhardt has been appointed a Fellow of the Transatlantic Young Leaders Study Group on the Future of Europe. The media expert is a frequent public speaker for the national media, and has been quoted by such international media outlets as The New York Times and The Guardian.
