题目: Additive Manufacturing and 3D Printing – Overview, History and Future

The collection of manufacturing technologies now known as additive manufacturing (AM) and 3D Printing exploded on the scene in the last half of the 1980s. From a near-term perspective, this phenomenon was driven by the advent of distributed desktop computing coupled to secondary factors such as the maturation of laser technology. From a long-term perspective, the field is built on layerwise manufacturing technologies that date back over 150 years. This presentation begins with an overview of the history of AM including precedents in topography and photosculpture. Lithophane production in polyamide using laser sintering is presented as an example of the unique features AM brings to manufacturing. Lithophanes are translucent plate images produced from digital photographs which are back lit. The brightness of each pixel is controlled by the local plate thickness. The future outlook for AM will also be considered.

Dr. David L. Bourell简介:
Dr. David L. Bourell is the Temple Foundation Professor of Mechanical Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin. He is currently Director of the Laboratory for Freeform Fabrication. Dr. Bourell's areas of research include particulate processing with emphasis on sintering kinetics and densification, and materials issues associated with Laser Sintering (LS).
