Professor Yukishige Ito received his PhD from The University of Tokyo in 1982 under the supervision of Prof. Masaji Ohno. He spent two years at Massachusetts Institute of Technology as a Postdoctoral Research Associate under the supervision of Prof. Satoru Masamune. In 1984, he joined RIKEN as a Research Scientist and was then promoted to Senior Scientist in 1996 and Chief Scientist in 1998. His research interests are: 1) development of novel synthetic methodologies and their application to glycoconjugate-related molecular probes, 2) synthesis studies toward delineating biological functions of glycoconjugates and discovery of novel bioactive compounds, 3) synthetic approaches to glycoprotein processing and protein quality control, and 4) analysis of carbohydrate binding molecules. In recent years, Prof. Ito has published 400 scientific papers and achieved many awards including Japan Society for Bioscience, Biotechnology, and Agrochemistry Award.
