Research Seminar by Professor Sam Zhang on 1. Hard yet Tough Nanocomposite Coatings 2. Research Opportunities at the School of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore Synopsis
1. In recent years, extensive experimental efforts have been made to synthesis nanocomposite coatings with super hardness and high toughness. Thin films with super hardness have been frequently reported. However for engineering applications, coating toughness is as important. Advanced nanocomposite coatings with high toughness, and simultaneously with sufficiently high hardness are desired for practical engineering applications. This talk will gives an overview of the history and status of development of hard yet tough nanocomposite films and the development of toughness measurement methodologies for hard thin films.
2. The school of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) of the Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore, is a well-established engineering school whose traditions are deeply rooted in excellence. We have a staff strength of over 150 professors in 6 divisions: Aerospace Engineering, Engineering Mechanics, Manufacturing Engineering, Mechatronics & Design, Systems and Engineering Management, Thermal and Fluids Engineering, working in the following research areas:
Smart Product Design Intelligent Manufacturing Smart Materials Electronic Packaging Mechanism Design Micromachines Sensors and Actuators Precision Engineering Rapid Design, Prototyping and Tooling Surface Engineering Material Modelling Sputtering of Thin Films Automation and Control Materials and Processing Biomedical Engineering Indoor Air Quality and Pollution Control Thermal Management Heat Transfer Fluids Engineering Eng Techn Management Robotics Robot Vision
Research positions are now open for studies leading to Ph.D. degree. Inquires are welcome
Speaker Bio:
Graduated from University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA (PhD 1991), Dr Sam Zhang now holds a full professorship at the school of MAE, NTU. His research interests include ceramic thin films and coatings, bioceramic coatings and memory thin films and applications. He has published over 140 peer reviewed journal papers with average “per paper citation” over 6 times. He is very active internationally and has been frequently invited to give plenary or invited talks outside Singapore (USA, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Spain, France, Greece, Germany, etc.) Prof. Zhang also serves as Principal Editor of Journal of Materials Research (USA) and Member of the Expert Panel of China National Science and Technology Awards. Details of his working and research publications can be accessed at http://www.ntu.edu.sg/home/msyzhang
