Biotechnology poses unique challenges and opportunities for membrane-based separations. GE is a major player to provide membrane products to this lucrative biotech market. In this presentation, the opportunities and technical challenges for membrane products and processes will be discussed with specific examples of scientific innovation and industrial applications of GE products. In particular, the scientific aspect of industrial solution to biotech challenge will be illustrated by controlling membrane chemical composition through coordination chemistry and photochemical surface modification; and by controlling membrane physical structure (thickness, porosity and pore size distribution) through theoretical simulation, additive nucleation and multi-layer composite approaches.
