Magneto-Optic Kerr Effect (MOKE) technique, was introduced in 1985 to measure the hysteresis loops magnetic thin films with atomic layer sensitivity. Since then MOKE has been evolved into one of the most popular experimental techniques and has made a significant impact on magnetic nanostructure research. In this talk, I will review the history of this subject, both successful and failed approaches, to outline the pathway from the discovery of the magneto-optic effect to today experimental MOKE setup. The talk will be given at the level of students who have not yet or just started to do research. The objective is to let students appreciate the real life research as opposed to the "clean physics" in classroom textbooks. |
