Abstract

This seminar will review several intriguing quantum and classical size effects on thermal and thermoelectric properties of nanostructured and complex materials. Topics to be discussed include the Casimir limit of lattice thermal conductivity of nanowires and nanocomposites, the interplay between phonon-interface scattering and crystal complexity in III-V and silicide nanostructures, andthe effects of lateral size and interface interaction on thermal transport in carbon nanotubes and graphene. The potential applications of these advanced materials will be discussed using the examples of two currentteam effortson developing thermoelectric waste heat recovery devices based on complex silicides and high-energy density thermal energy storage systems employing a graphene foam architecture. The seminar will be concluded with an introduction of the graduate study program of Texas Materials Institute.
