Abstract:. The microcirculation (arterioles, capillaries, venules) contributes to most of the resistance and all of the transport phenomena in the circulation. Unlike blood flow in large arteries, a continuous fluid model cannot be assumed. The reason is due to the particulate nature of the red blood cells, which causes Non-Newtonian fluid properties in small blood vessels. We shall discuss some of our current research in this area.

Vita: C.Y. Wang obtained B.S. from Taiwan University and Ph.D. from M.I.T. He is now Prof. of Mathematics, Physiology and Mechanical Engineering at Michigan State University. Dr. Wang published about 350 papers in fluid, solid, and biomechanics, and wrote two books (Perturbation Theory, Exact Solutions for Buckling).
