简介:
Biomechanics of Auditory System and Implantable Hearing Devices
Hearing impairment is one of the most common physical disabilities in the world. Conductive hearing loss results from dysfunction of the middle ear, and sensorineural hearing loss results from abnormalities within the cochlea or central nervous system. In the past several years, we have used bioengineering methodology, a combined physiological, anatomical and engineering approach through both experimental measurement and computational modeling, to describe ear biomechanics for sound transmission through the external ear canal, middle ear and inner ear, and to develop middle ear implantable hearing devices, a new emerging technology for sound amplification. This talk will report our research accomplishments in those areas including: (1) acoustic-mechanical measurements of the middle ear transfer function for sound transmission in human cadaver ears (or temporal bones) with laser Doppler interferometry; (2) characterization of viscoelastic properties of middle ear tissues such as the eardrum and middle ear suspensory ligaments/muscles with micro-tensile material testing system and digital image correlation method; (3) combination of 3-D reconstruction and finite element (FE) methods to create the accurate FE model of human ear for multi-field coupled analysis of acoustic-mechanical transmission; and (4) design and in vitro testing of middle ear implantable hearing devices for restoration of hearing.
