I will present High Energy Density Sciences(HEDS) including phase transition under the extreme condition, where the energy density is much higher than the previous conventional phases. 1)High pressure condensed matter and creation of new material such as metallic carbon with high power lasers. 2)Warm dense matter and radiative hydrodynamics where the atomic process is critical. 3)Relativistic plasmas generated with ultra-intense laser light. Utilizing these characterized states, we are developing novel devices consisted of transient HED plasmas to control intense light and HED particle beams under the new terminology “HED plasma photonics”. These devices will be useful for investigation of new material states generated with high power lasers such as metallic carbon and hydrogen as well as for the advanced laser fusion concept research and medical and industrial applications.

Ryosuke Kodama is a Professor of Graduate School of Engineering, Osaka University. He also is a Professor of Institute of Laser Engineering, Osaka University. He studied electrical engineering and science at Osaka University, earning his B.S. degree in 1985, his M.S. degree in 1987, and his Ph.D. degree in 1990. He was a visiting researcher at Clarendon Laboratory, Oxford University and Central Laser Facility, Rutherford Appleton in UK from 1990 to 1992, an assistant professor from 1993 to 1999 and an associate professor from 2000 to 2004 at Institute of Laser Engineering, Osaka University in Japan.
Scientific theme investigated over the past 20 years is systematic study of high energy density physics such as laser fusion, high energy density particle generation, x-ray generation including x-ray lasers, laboratory astrophysics and related diagnostics and laser technology development. He is now exploring the high energy density science in methods of introducing a Plasma Photonics concept to control intense light and high energy density charged particles and high energy density matter such as high pressure matter and warm dense matter. He published more than 150 papers such as Nature 432, 1005 (2004) “High energy plasma photonics” and Nature 412, (2001) 798 “Cone target compression and heating for fast ignition”.
Professor Kodama received a Research Fellowships for Young Scientists of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) in 1988, JSPS Special Postdoctoral Fellowships for Research Abroad in 1990. He also received the Daiwa Award from the Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation in 1993, the Incentive Awards from the Japan Laser Society in 2002, the Excellence of Fusion Engineering Awards from the USA Fusion Power Associates in 2002, the Minister Prize on Science and Technology from the MEXT Japan in 2005, the JSPS Prize from the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science and award for Excellence in Plasma Physics Research from the American Physical Society in 2006. |
