Nanoscience and nanotechnology offer the promise of producing revolutionary advances in areas ranging from computing and communication to biotechnology and medicine. This talk will present recent work on rational syntheses of semiconductor nanowires, nanowire heterostructures, and the assembly into functional devices and systems for electronics and optoelectronics applications. First and with a focus on the bottom-up paradigm of nanoscience, the recent development in synthesis of nanowire building blocks and the device characteristics enabled by these materials will be described. Consideration of architectural designs, which exploit these fundamental developments, coupled with advances in hierarchical assembly of nanowire building blocks will be used to demonstrate a pathway for achieving universal computing structures. Second, a discussion of developments in nanoscale optoelectronics, including crossed nanowire UV-blue light emitting diodes, single nanowire light emitting diodes and photodetectors, will be presented. Lastly, novel branched nanowires that integrate uniquely materials and functions at nanoscale will be discussed.
