Marvin Carlson is the Sidney E. Cohn Professor of Theatre and Comparative Literature at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. He is the author of numerous books and articles on theatre and performance theory and history, especially the theatre of Western Europe. His work has been translated into fourteen languages. He is the founding editor of the journal Western European Stages and has translated plays from French, German, and Arabic into English. In 2000 he was a guest professor at the Freie Universitat in Berlin Germany and in 2005 he was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Athens. His most recent book, Speaking in Tongues (University of Michigan, 2006) deals with the use of multiple languages in the theatre. |
