Prior to becoming Chief Research Officer, Dr. Ray served as Director of PNNL’s Chemical Sciences Division.  In that position, he managed 125 staff and was responsible for PNNL’s DOE Basic Energy  Sciences and Environmental Management Science research programs, PNNL’s  Nanoscience & Technology Initiative, PNNL’s Interfacial Catalysis Initiative and the emerging Institute for Interfacial Catalysis, the University of Washington/PNNL Joint Institute for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology and, jointly with the University of Washington and Simon Fraser University, the Pacific Northwest Consortium Collaborative Access Team at the Advanced Photon Source sited at Argonne National Laboratory.

Previously Dr. Ray served as Deputy Associate Laboratory Director, Fundamental Science Directorate where he was responsible for leading the team to conceptualize a new research facility for systems biology and biotechnology at PNNL.  The facility concept developed by the team is being considered currently as part of the Department of Energy’s Genomes-to-Life research program.  Prior to that, Ray served as Deputy Director of the William R. Wiley Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory (EMSL), a National Scientific User Facility, where he was responsible for implementation of the user program, user outreach and for ensuring that the research resources in EMSL met the needs of the scientific user community.

Dr. Ray holds a Ph. D. in Chemistry from the University of California at Berkeley where his mentor was Richard J. Saykally.  He was a postdoctoral research associate with W. Carl Lineberger at the Joint Institute for Laboratory Astrophysics before joining PNNL.  Dr. Ray is a member of the American Chemical Society, the American Physical Society, the American Geophysical Union and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
