Thermal radiation transport in nanostructures differs from that in macrostructures due to various wave effects.  This talk will discuss a few examples to illustrate such differences.  One part of the talk will focus on the breakdown of Planck’s blackbody radiation law, which is considered to be the maximum that a surface can emit.   Particularly emphasis will be given to surface phonon-polaritons that can store large amount of energy near the surface.  Although theory has predicted that radiation heat transfer between such surfaces in the near-field can exceed that of Planck’s law, we will provide experimental evidence that demonstrates the failure of the Planck law at nanoscale, mediated by surface phonon-polariton exchange.  The second part of the talk will discuss various ways to trap solar thermal radiation, geared towards solar thermal and solar photovoltaic applications.

作者简介:

Dr. Gang Chen is currently the Warren and Towneley Rohsenow Professor at MIT.  He obtained his Ph.D. degree from UC Berkeley in 1993.  He was a faculty member at Duke University, University of California at Los Angeles, and moved to MIT in 2001.  He is a recipient of the NSF Young Investigator Award, a Guggenheim Fellow, and an ASME Fellow.  He has published extensively in the area of nanoscale energy transport and conversion and nanoscale heat transfer. He serves on the editorial boards for five journals in heat transfer and nanotechnology and chairs the advisory board of ASME Nanotechnology Institute.
