Abstract

Photoalignment is a method to align liquid crystal by a light sensitive material. The method is used to align nematic, chiral, blue phase and ferro-electric liquid crystal. The patterned illumination can be made with interference or by using spatial light modulator. Different patterns and the 3D director configurations are discussed. Applications in spectroscopy and augmented reality are discussed.

Bio

Kristiaan Neyts is full professor at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) in the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering (ECE) and Director of the State Key Laboratory of Advanced Displays and Optoelectronics Technologies (SKLADT) since September 2023.

He received a degree in physics engineering in 1987 and a doctoral degree in engineering in 1992 from Ghent University. He became assistant professor at Ghent University in the Electronics and Information Systems department in the faculty of Engineering and Architecture in 2000, after post-docs in Ghent and Berkeley. In 2012 he was promoted to the rank of senior full professor at Ghent University. He is co-author of over 290 papers in the Web of Science core collection, and promotor or co-promotor of 31 completed PhDs.
