Abstract:
Micro air vehicles (MAVs) with wingspan of 15 cm or shorter, and flight speed around 10 m/s or lower have attracted substantial interests in recent years. There are several prominent features of MAV flight: (i) low Reynolds number (102-105), resulting in degraded aerodynamic performance for fixed and rigid wings, (ii) small physical dimensions, resulting in certain favorable scaling characteristics including structural strength, reduced stall speed, and impact tolerance, and (iii) comparable wind speed and flight speed, making the aerodynamic environment intrinsically unsteady and vehicle control much harder. Compared to a rigid wing, a flexible wing can better adapt the flight environment and handle stall. Compared to a fixed wing, an appropriately designed flapping wing can enhance lift and thrust with wider variations in flight speed. We will discuss the bio-inspired aerodynamics associated with flapping wing, fluid and structure interactions, and MAV.
