Abstract:
Precursor emissions and the sensitivities of ozone to these emissions are the two fundamental problems for understanding ozone pollution problems. We will first look at the decrease of NOx emissions during the Beijing Olympics Game and show how daily-assimilated inversion method can be applied to deduce high-temporary resolution emission change data using Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) observations. We will then examine the implications ofSCanning Imaging Absorption SpectroMeter for Atmospheric CartograpHY (SCIAMACHY) measurements for aromatics emissions in China using the regional chemical transport model (REAM). Lastly, we apply the 1-D REAM model to analyze in situ observations of ozone photochemistry in Beijing to understand the primary radical sources and sinks in summer. One important ramification is that ozone production is neither NOx nor VOC limited, but in a transition regime, where reduction of either NOx or VOCs could result in reduction of ozone production. The transition regime implies more flexibility in the ozone control strategies than a binary system of either NOx or VOC limited regime.
Short Biography:
Dr. Yuhang Wang is a Professor of Atmospheric Chemistry in the School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at Georgia Institute of Technology. He has wide interests in understanding changing anthropogenic and biogenic emissions, transport processes (large-scale/long-range transport, convection, and boundary layer mixing), gaseous and heterogeneous reactions and their impacts, chemical proxies for atmospheric processes, and interactions between air quality and climate change. In recent years, he has become more and more interested in ozone and aerosol related science issues in China.
