报告摘要:
Accelerators are essential tools of discovery and have many practical uses. At the forefront of accelerator technology are the machines that deliver beams for particle physics, for synchrotron and free electron based radiation sources. The technology that drives these accelerators is extremely sophisticated but is limited by the maximum sustainable accelerating field. This impacts the size and cost of the device. More than three decades ago, lasers were proposed as power source for driving novel accelerators based on plasmas as the accelerating medium. An overview will be presented of the basic principles of laser plasma accelerators (LPA) and of the research at LBNL. This includes the 2004 demonstration of high quality electron beams [1], the 2006 demonstration of GeV class beams from a 3 cm long accelerating structure [2], recent work on controlled injection [3], staging of modules and the BELLA project which aims at a 10 GeV meter scale accelerator. We then discuss the challenges of this technology towards applicability for advanced light sources and colliders.

报告人简介:
Dr. Wim Leemans obtained his Ph.D from UCLA in 1991 and received the 1992 APS-DPP Simon Ramon Award for his dissertation on plasma beatwave acceleration related physics. He has been at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory since 1991 and is currently a senior scientist and Head of the LOASIS Program at LBNL, Director of the BELLA Project, research physicist at UC Berkeley and adjunct professor at University of Nevada Reno. His research interests have been and are on laser plasma accelerator science and hyperspectral radiation sources. In 1996 he was a co-recipient of the Klaus Halbach Award for demonstration of femtosecond x-rays from Thomson scattering. For his work in laser plasma acceleration he received the 2005 United States Particle Accelerator School Prize for Achievement in Accelerator Physics and Technology, Outstanding Performance Awards at LBNL in 2005 and 2006, the 2009 E.O. Lawrence Award from the U.S. Department of Energy, and the 2010 APS John Dawson Award for Excellence in Plasma Physics Research. He is a Fellow of both APS and IEEE. Three of his students have won outstanding dissertation awards (APS-DPP, APS-DPB and PJAS).
