  简介:

University rankings have added an important aspect to the competitive market forces in higher education. In the desire to achieve high standing, some universities are responding directly to the criteria used in creating these comparisons—especially such factors as research expenditures, publications, and highly cited professors. The rankings also have indirect influence.  For example, larger institutions are likely to generate more scholarly output, so increased enrollment and faculty size are logical responses to the rankings. Governments, too, react to these comparisons as a matter of national pride, often investing more resources to boost the competitiveness of their universities.

On January 5, 2010, the Brookings-Tsinghua Center for Public Policy will host Kathryn Mohrman, director of the University Design Consortium and a faculty member in the School of Public Affairs at Arizona State University, to discuss the international competition in higher education with case studies of universities in China, Asia, Europe, and the United States. The presentation concludes with a response to the following questions:

·         How are universities in China, Asia, Europe and the United States responding to growing international competition?

·         Which institutions have the strongest base from which to complete?

·         What estimates of success can be offered for the case study universities in the global marketplace in the future?
