Abstract

Synthesis of nano-materials via flame-based methods carries advantages over other synthesis methods. In this talk, the ability to systematically study fundamental phenomena governing formation of nano-materials will be demonstrated. The effect of surface oxygen desorption on nano-crystal phase equilibrium will be discussed in terms of the predicted size-dependent phase diagram for Anatase and Rutile TiO2. The kinetics of oxidation in flames will be discussed in terms of the systematic observation of manganese oxidation from Mn(II) oxide to Mn(II,III) oxide. Deposition of carbon metal oxide films from premixed stagnation flames will also be discussed.

 

Bio:

Joaquin Camacho is an Assistant Professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department at San Diego State University. His work focuses on fundamental processes governing formation of nano-materials in flames and high-temperature reacting flow. Example systems include nano-scale carbon and metal oxides. Characterization and applications of technology relevant materials is also a focus of his lab.  Joaquin obtained his PhD from the University of Southern California and postdoctoral training at Stanford University. He teaches thermodynamics, heat transfer, combustion and has created a new course entitled “Scalable Manufacturing of Emerging Technologies”.
