Abstract: Urgency of man-made climate change has created substantial risks to nations and people. The US Federal recently revamped “45Q” tax credit, as an incentive policy for technology boosts the investment on the capture and store carbon emissions and the relevant infrastructure construction. However, to achieve deep decarbonization is difficult - many sectors are extremely hard to decarbonize based on the limited number of options and substantial costs. In this lecture, Dr. Friedmann will discuss the hardest parts of the global energy system to decarbonize, potential pathways to decarbonization, and a range of policy measures that could help finance and enable deployment. In addition, Dr. Friedmann will discuss advanced technology options for CO2 conversion and use and for CO2 removal from the air and oceans.

 

BioDr. S. Julio Friedmann is a Senior Research Scholar at Center for Global Energy Policy, Columbia University. He was the Director of US-India Lab Upgradation Initiative (2016-2017) US D.O.E and Principal Deputy Asst. Secretary (2014-2016) Office of Fossil Energy (FE), U.S. DOE. Now He leads a new effort, the Carbon Management Research Initiative (CaMRI), focused on bringing solutions in CCS, CO2 use, and CO2 removal into markets and deployment through innovations in technology, policy, and finance. He is the CEO and President of Carbon Wrangler, LLC, dedicated to helping others achieve deep decarbonization through application of advanced technology, practice, and project execution. He also serves as  Distinguished Associate at Energy Futures Initiative and Senior Advisor for Energy Innovation at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.
