A/Prof Eun-Jung Holden is a co-leader of the geophysics and image analysis theme within the Centre for Exploration Targeting (CET) at the University of Western Australia (UWA).  She gained a PhD in computer science at UWA specialising in computer vision and visualisation algorithms.  Her current research focuses on developing technologies to assist geoscientific data analysis for the minerals industry. 

Her research at CET focuses on developing technologies to improve mineral exploration in three specific areas.  The first area is the development of automated feature detection algorithms to assist the interpretation of various geoscientific data, e.g. potential field and televiewer data.   The applications include: magnetic data analysis tools to assist gold exploration and copper gold rich porphyry exploration, which were commercialized through Geosoft in 2010 and 2011 respectively (http://www.geosoft.com/products/software-extensions/cet-grid-analysis; http://www.geosoft.com/products/software-extensions/cet-porphyry-detection); and a geotechnical televiewer data analysis application that is supported by a major mining company.   The second area of research is to understand human data interactions during geoscientific data interpretation, with a specific aim to define ‘effective interpretation’.  This study uses an eye tracker, and electroencephalography sensors capture physiological and neurological responses of an interpreter to understand human-data interactions during interpretation.  The last research area is to develop an exploration simulator which provides strategy training by allowing an explorer to exercise exploration decision making and to learn the consequences of their decisions, based on various data capture and interpretation.
