We present design philosophy and technical goals of a planned CPHS SANS beamline in view of pulsed-source small angle neutron scattering's technical (dis)advantages, past instrument-building history and current development trends. The CPHS SANS aims to be a "hybrid" instrument on which both useful research on large scale structure science, and new development on advanced neutronics techniques could be conducted. The first objective of the project calls for a beamline with flux at sample position no smaller than 10^4 n/cm^2/s and capable of collecting SANS data of reasonable quality between 0.01~0.5 Angstrom^-1.Parallel development efforts, if successful, are expected to upgrade the flux beyond 10^5 n/cm^2/s and/or place the low q limit well within 10^-4 Angstrom^-1 range. |
