根据中美科技合作协议精神,将在清华大学与美国农业部农业应用研究中心共同建设“中美生物燃料技术研发中心”,为祝贺该中心的成立,兹定于2008年5月12日下午在清华大学周培源应用数学研究中心报告厅举行“生物燃料前沿技术报告会”。

报告人简介:

1. Dr. Z. Lewis Liu

Dr. Zonglin Lewis Liu is a Research Molecular Biologist at National Center for Agricultural Utilization Research, USDA. Dr. Liu has a M.S. in Microbiology from Chinese Academy of Sciences and a Ph.D. in Plant Pathology from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Following a 2-years of postdoctoral research associate study in Molecular Biology, Dr. Liu worked as a Scientist and Senior Scientist in an industry R&D and returned to academia for molecular biology and genome research. At University of Illinois, Dr. Liu held positions of Visiting Assistant Professor, Research Assistant Professor, and Research Associate Professor. In 2002, Dr. Liu Joined USDA leading genomic studies of microbial stress tolerance for low cost biofuels production. Dr. Liu is a frequently invited speaker to give lectures nationally and internationally on subjects of genomic research on yeast stress tolerance, tolerant strain development, and enhanced gene expression technology development. Dr. Liu is an Editor of Applied Microbiology and Biotechnology and actively involved in professional education programs. Dr. Liu has received over $2 mil external research funding support and is a mentor of 2 postdoctoral research associates. Dr. Liu currently serves as Project Director for National Research Initiative Project “Genomic mechanisms of in situ detoxification of biomass conversion inhibitors for ethanologenic yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae”.

2. Dr. Joe Song

Joe Song received his Ph.D. in 2002 and M.S. in Electrical Engineering in 1999, both from the University of Washington, Seattle. He obtained his B.S. in Electrical Engineering at Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications in 1992. He has been an Assistant Professor at the Department of Computer Science, New Mexico State University since 2005. He was Assistant Professor of Computer Science with Queens College and the doctoral faculty with Graduate Center, City University of New York from 2002 to 2005. His research areas include statistical computing, quantitative biology, and computer vision. His research has been supported by NSF, NIH, and USDA. He has received Interdisciplinary Research Grant, Graduate Research Enhancement Grant, and Undergraduate Research Initiative Grant from New Mexico State University Office of the Vice President for Research. His current research projects in systems biology involve computational modeling of large dynamic biological networks at the molecular level. His lab currently has two postdoc researchers, two doctoral graduate students, and two Master’s students. He has collaborated with life scientists on campus and around the nation to solve computational modeling problems involved in biofuels, cancer, neuroscience, and microbial communities. His research partners include scientists at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, USDA, and Lawrence Berkeley National Lab.
