简介:
The extraordinary transmission of electromagnetic waves through single apertures or periodic arrays of such apertures has been the subject of theoretical and experimental research for many years. Such enhanced transmissions should pave the way for the design of nano-photonic devices with novel functionality and high throughput, including near-field optical heads for data storage applications. An ever-present feature of nano-photonic devices that incorporate sub-wavelength apertures in metallic hosts is the excitation of surface plasmon polaritons (SPP) at metal-dielectric interfaces. We address certain fundamental aspects of SPPs, and present computer simulation results that elucidate the role of SPPs in transmission through nano-apertures.
