For much of the 20th century, the PRC, the USSR, and the Eastern Bloc espoused a historical science that insisted on the inevitability of stages of progress and the ultimate emancipation of all. With the “End of History” in the 1990s, the “past” has become the “future,” and the presumed happenings of the past came to supply the symbolic resources for the imaginary construction of the future. Yet the relationships between the tamed and the resurrected pasts — between “History” and “memories” — prove to be far less tractable in practice. This panel will examine and compare the politics of nostalgia and the practices of historical writing in contemporary Russia and China.
