Information on the Speaker

Dr Shuisheng He received his BSc and MSc from Huazhong University of Science and Technology, and PhD from the University of Manchester where he subsequently worked as a post-doctoral Researcher and later a Research Lecturer. In 1998 he left Manchester and joined British Energy as a Thermal Hydraulic Analyst. A few years later he joined the Robert Gordon University as a Lecturer, later Reader before moving to University of Aberdeen in 2005 as a Senior Lecturer.

 

Dr Shuisheng He has a long standing interest in unsteady turbulent pipe flows. He has conducted a series of experimental investigations on linearly acceleration/deceleration as well as pulsating flows. He also backed-up these with computational modelling using a variety of turbulence models.

 

Abstract

At the seminar, Dr He will give a brief overview of his group’s current research interests followed by a more detailed account of the experimental and computational investigations on turbulence dynamics in unsteady flows.

 

The experimental work to be discussed was conducted over a period of several years in Manchester, Aberdeen and Delft for accelerating/decelerating and pulsating flows using LDA, PIV and hot-film systems. New information and valuable insight into certain fundamental aspects of turbulence dynamics has emerged from the studies which will be discussed. One of the most interesting findings was the identification of the timescales of the response of turbulence in a transient flow which are related to the processes of turbulence production, turbulence energy redistribution among the three components and the propagation of turbulence radially. He will also discuss understanding developed on the behaviours of wall shear stress in unsteady flows and its prediction. Much of the understanding was developed with the aid of computational studies.
