Functional Profiling of Toxicant Susceptibility Genes in Yeast

One reason that individuals vary in how susceptible they are to toxic effects of chemicals is because they differ in genes that are affected by the chemicals. Cancers and other disease can arise from such interactions between environmental agents and genes. How agents affect the cell is likely to influence which genes are affected.

At present, understanding of the ways in which many chemicals affect cells is limited. In this presentation, Professor Chris Vulpe will describe the use of genome-wide functional profiling in yeast to investigate the targets for toxic chemicals in cells. This approach takes advantage of the fact that many aspects of human metabolism are also conserved in yeast. Professor Vulpe will describe research results for selected metals and metalloids, including cadmium and arsenic, and the identification of several candidate susceptibility genes with human homologs.
