Topic: Data handling and use in the National Traffic Control Centre

Abstract: The National Traffic Control Centre (NTCC) System records and determines the traffic conditions on the trunk road network in England using roadside infrastructure, and delivers strategic response services to influence driver behaviour and maintain efficient traffic operation under a particular set of events, traffic conditions or weather conditions, or any combination thereof. Initial operations have suggested a need for continuous improvement. TRG was commissioned to research improved methodologies for the flow monitoring/classification, event detection, delay estimation and traffic profiling. The presentation will introduce TRG research work for the NTCC, including new algorithms for section flow estimation, event detection and improvement of historic profile. These researches have been done based on analysis of two year's traffic and travel data collected at about 1000 sites.

Research Interests

Dr Yanying Li, a GPS/electronic engineer by background, is a research fellow in TRG. Her PhD topic was Journey Time Estimation and Incident Detection Using GPS. She has been carrying out research on the use of GPS equipped probe vehicles for traffic data collection, observation and analysis of driver behaviour. She has been involved with EC funded projects, such as STARDUST and MIRACLES, in modelling and evaluation of the applications of ITS technologies, especially satellite navigation related technologies. She has been involved with benefit assessment for applications of Cooperative Vehicle Highway Systems (CVHS). She has also studied the use of satellite navigation technology in the rail industry, including reviewing the current applications and research activities in the area, and investigating the potential future use of the GPS and Galileo to improve the quality of rail service. More recently she has been working on development of a rail demand model for Rail Research UK (RRUK).
