Abstract The human race has experienced a number of revolutions: agricultural, industrial, and now an information revolution. Each has had a major impact on society. This talk will discuss three aspects of the information revolution and the impact it will have. First we will discuss the impact of the earlier revolutions and the impact they had on our lives. Second we will discuss the impact that the information revolution will have. Third we will discuss what the United States and China should to do to improve lives of their citizens. Bio John Hopcroft is the IBM Professor of Engineering and Applied Mathematics in Computer Science at Cornell University. Hopcroft's research centers on theoretical aspects of computing, especially analysis of algorithms, automata theory, and graph algorithms. He was honored with the A. M. Turing Award in 1986. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) and the National Academy of Engineering (NAE), a foreign member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the fellow of AAAS, IEEE, and ACM.
