  简介:

Topologically ordered phases which are beyond the paradigm of symmetry-breaking theory have attracted lots of attentions for years from not only condensed matter physics, but also high-energy physics, quantum information science, and mathematical physics. A topological order is featured with robust ground state degeneracy, nontrivial braiding statistics and fusion of topological excitations, topological entanglement entropy, etc. At low energies, topological quantum field theory (TQFT) is utilized as the effective field theory to describe topologically ordered phases. In this talk, I will first review 2D topological order and its effective theory, the Chern-Simons theory. In 3-dimensional space, though particle excitations cannot have anyonic statistics, loop excitations play an important role. We classify braiding processes that involve particle and loop excitations into three classes. Each class of braiding process is captured by a topological BF theory. We find that only a set of compatible braiding phases can label 3D topologically ordered state. In addition, fusion rules and loop shrinking rules in 3D topological order can also be obtained from the effective theory. The guiding principle is gauge invariance. Last, this field-theoretical framework can be generalized for topological orders in higher dimensions.
