In this presentation, Christian Gänshirt will introduce the main concepts of his design theory book Tools for Ideas (Chinese title: 创意工具：建筑设计初步), and discuss recent research on architectural design. Referring to Donald A. Schön's theory of reflective practice, Tools for Ideas proposes the concept of the design cycle as a recurrent time pattern in order to describe the reflective and repetitive structure of design processes. The first section of the book focuses on the much-discussed relationship between design and research, between architecture and the sciences. The second section describes basic design approaches, from classical authors like Vitruvius and Alberti through Erwin Panofsky and Wolfgang Kemp to Otl Aicher and Vilém Flusser. The third and largest section presents the elementary tools of design, from gestures and words through drawings, models, and simulations to theory and critique, all as instruments of creative design in architecture and its related fields. Being used in architecture schools in more than ten countries, Tools for Ideas aims to improve design studio teaching by offering educators and students a theoretical and historical background for their design activities. |
