Dr Xinli Du got his bachelor's degree from Shanghai Jiaotong University. He then got his PhD degree from Loughborough University U.K. He joined Brunel University London as a lecturer since 2010. His research is mainly focused on robotic surgery, especially for cochlear implantation. He now is the director of the Robotic Surgery Lab in Brunel University London.

In this lecture, Dr Du will introduce the development of robotic surgery and the design of a surgical robot for cochlear implantation. Cochlear implant is a hearing implant for patients with severe-to-profound hearing loss. Using robotic devices, it is possible to reduce and minimize the damage during the implantation surgery so that most residual hearing can be reserved. The robotic devices use smart sensing scheme and hand guided method to provide accurate and consistent results. This will help the surgeons to minimise the surgical trauma and maximise the potential performance of the hearing implants.
