报告摘要:

An underground laboratory with a vertical overburden of 235 m of rock was set up in the Aberdeen Tunnel on Hong Kong Island, about 55 km away from the Daya Bay nuclear power complex in Shenzhen, China where the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment is being carried out.  The objective of the Aberdeen Tunnel Experiment is to study spallation neutrons induced by cosmic-ray muons in an underground environment, as these neutrons will constitute an important background signal in the anti-neutrino detectors used in Daya Bay Experiment.

The detector in Aberdeen Tunnel consists of a neutron detector filled with ~0.65 ton of 0.09% Gd-doped liquid scintillator, and three layers of plastic scintillators sandwiching the neutron detector for detecting incoming muons.  Preliminary result showed that the muon-induced neutron rate in the neutron detector is about 1.4 per day.

In this talk, I will talk about the design and performance of the detector and discuss some of the preliminary results.
