Place: Lecture Hall, Floor 3, Jin Chun Yuan West Building, Tsinghua University

Lecture 1: Modular forms and class field theory

He will describe various connections between classical modular forms and the explicit construction of class fields (abelian extensions) of number fields, and their eventual generalisations.

Lecture 2: Rigid analytic modular cocycles

The “rigid analytic modular cocycles” of the title are objects which display a loose analogy, in a p-adic setting, with the “quantum modular forms” described and studied by Zagier. Various arithmetic applications of these modular cocycles, notably to the possible construction of class fields of real quadratic fields, will be described.

Introduction of Speaker:

Henri Rene Darmon is a French Canadian mathematician specializing in number theory. He works on Hilbert's 12th problem and its relation with the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture. He is currently a James McGill Professor of Mathematics at McGill University and a member of the Laboratoire CICMA of the CRM (Centre de Recherches Mathématiques) in Montreal.

Darmon received his B.Sc from McGill University in 1987 and his Ph.D from Harvard University in 1991 under supervision of Benedict Gross. From 1991 to 1996, he held positions in Princeton University. Since 1994, he has been a professor at McGill University.

He was elected to the Royal Society of Canada in 2003. In 2008, he was awarded the Royal Society of Canada's John L. Synge Award. He received the 2017 CRM-Fields-PIMS prize and the 2017 AMS Cole Prize in Number Theory "for his contributions to the arithmetic of elliptic curves and modular forms."
