New Methods for C–C, C–O, and C–N Bond Formation with Zinc and Palladium

We have recently become interested in the generation and reactions of 1-alkenyl-1,1-bimetallic reagents.  These alkenyl dianion synthons are mild yet very versatile reagents for organic synthesis.  Our bimetallic reagents are readily generated using common laboratory reagents and techniques and enable the synthesis of B(pin) substituted allylic alcohols, alpha-hydroxy ketones, cyclopropane diols, both cis- and trans-2,3-disubstituted cyclobutanones, as well as functionalized allylic alcohols.  Using this method, we have also prepared B(pin)-substituted allylic acetates, which undergo chemoselective reactions with palladium catalysts at the allylic acetate and also undergo a variety of tandem reactions.
