    The MIT Nuclear Reactor Laboratory (MIT-NRL) is an interdepartmental center that operates a high performance nuclear research reactor, the MIT Research Reactor (MITR). It is the second largest university research reactor in the U.S. and the only one located on the campus of a major research university. The MITR is a 6 MW tank-type reactor.  The reactor core power density and neutron spectrum are similar to those found in a Light Water Reactors which make the MITR an extremely useful test bed for a wide range of nuclear material and fuel research. Activities at the reactor include teaching and training, neutron activation analysis, neutron beam experiments, reactor physics experiments for benchmarking, and a very active program in advanced materials, fuel, and instrumentation development using a variety of in-core experimental facilities. Ongoing research programs at NRL include the Low Enrichment Uranium fuel conversion study of the MITR,materials irradiation as part of the Fluoride salt-cooled High temperature Reactor (FHR) technology development, a transportable FHR feasibility study, and in-core irradiations in support of Accident Tolerant Fuel research, advanced in-core instrumentation testing, Transient Reactor Test Facility (TREAT) fuel irradiation tests.An overview of NRL’s research programthat highlights the accomplishments of MIT-NRL as a university-based research center will be presented.
