报告摘要:
The structural integrity of containment materials, engineered barriers, and encapsulants is key to ensure safe transport, long-term interim storage, and the controlled disposal of radwaste and nuclear products. Information to underpin and better understand life-limiting factors, such as the effects of long-term degradation and corrosion damage, changes in surface condition and contamination, or inherent design and production related design aspects are elucidated. The characterisation of material-environment interactions (e.g. containment-chemistry-mechanics-radiation) is therefore crucial to provide a robust approach for the safe handling and storage over time.

This presentation provides an overview of current research on containment materials and techniques to characterise and understand associated environment–material interactions. Aspects of corrosion and stress corrosion cracking of metallic waste container materials are briefly introduced, followed by a discussion on microstructure development of cement-based encapsulants and surface decontamination techniques. Examples addressing the characterisation of proton-irradiated fuel cladding, Cs/Sr contaminated steel surfaces, and the effect of cement/concrete microstructure on microstructure integrity will be introduced, supported by the application of 2D/3D/4D-based in-situ approaches to quantify material degradation kinetics and 
报告人简介:

Dr Dirk Engelberg is Deputy Director of the Materials Performance Centre (MPC), an internationally recognised centre on nuclear materials research, with 70-80 PhD-students/PostDocs/Academics. He has >15 years experience in energy-related projects, and is leading the China General Nuclear (CGN)/UoManchester Joint Research Centre (JRC) collaboration.

Dr Engelberg also manages his vibrant research group (typically 15+ Students/PostDocs), aiming at developing robust and resilient approaches for the prediction, simulation, and mitigation of environment-assisted degradation in nuclear plant, radwaste storage/disposal, and petro-chemical environments. He has interest in microstructure engineering and cement-mortar-concrete performance, in-situ/time-lapse techniques, surface modifications, with a number of cross-disciplinary projects bridging into mechanical & civil engineering, as well as radio-chemistry.

Dr Engelberg regularly provides expert (panel) reviews for Radwaste Waste Managemet Ltd. (RWNM), the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA), the National Nuclear Laboratories (NNL), as well as industry partners. His research is supported by RCUK (EPSRC), Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA), national laboratories and institutes (NNL, TWI), UK industry (Sellafield Ltd., Special Metals, BEP Surface Technology), overseas industry partners (CGN/China, JFE Steel Cooperation/Japan) and overseas organisations (DoD/US, KONICOF/Korea, JAEA/Japan).
