McGowan has worked in the area of metals in medicine for many years. He has collaborated with companies such as for the production of new metal containing anticancer drugs. McGowan is also Chair of the Board of Directors of DyeCat Ltd (www.dyecat.com). The work has been designated a “Hot Paper” by the Editors and is also an Angewandte journal cover. From a polylactide (PLA) polymer resin, the fibre was made and woven into a black dress, which is currently on exhibit in the Science Museum in London.
