报告摘要:Silicon photonics offers a low-cost platform for building large-scale photonic devices and circuits, potentially replicating the success of silicon microelectronics in photonics. Photonic crystal nanostructures provide novel physical mechanisms, such as the slow-light effect and superprism effect, to help reduce the size and improve the performance of silicon photonic devices. This talk will review our recent work on the physics of the slow light effect and superprism effect, and their device applications. A theoretical framework for efficient calculation of optical loss in slow light photonic crystal waveguides (PCWs) will be presented. This framework provides insight into loss reduction and enables the design of low loss PCWs. This talk will also review our recent work on high-speed silicon modulators based on slow light PCWs. In addition, the concept of the dispersion surface curvature will be introduced to reveal the ultimate limit of the superprism effect. Potential application of various photonic crystal theories to condensed matter physics problems will be discussed. These research endeavors show how device engineering drives the needs in basic research and how basic research helps enable advances in device engineering.
