The integration of diagnostic imaging capability with therapeutic interventions is critical in addressing the challenges of cancer heterogeneity and adaptation. Therefore, we constructed gold-nanoshelled microcapsules composed of ultrasound responded polymeric microcapsules for systemic contrast-enhanced ultrasound imaging diagnosis, and near infrared (NIR) light absorbed gold nanoshells on the microcapsule surface for remote photohyperthermia.
By administration of this novel theranostic agent, ultrasound contrast imaging can be applied to identify the size and location of the tumor, and then, under real-time ultrasound guidance and monitoring, NIR laser-induced photothermal therapy could be targetedly carried out based on the diagnostic imaging results, avoiding the damage of normal tissues. Finally, after the treatment procedure, the effectiveness of the therapy could be evaluated by ultrasound contrast agents-assisted diagnosis to determine whether or not to carry out further treatment. This may significantly shorten the treatment time, simplify the procedure and make the treatment more efficient. In the early future, the theranositc agent with simplicity and high efficiency would remarkably improve the methodologies of cancer diagnosis and therapy.
