告简介: Ultracold atoms have many applications to important problems in physics today, including quantum computing, development of advanced quantum sensors, and the study of quantum gases including Bose-Einstein condensates. Our experiments in these areas will be described, focusing on our development of all-optical atomic Bose Einstein condensates. We will discuss how we create ‘squeezed’ quantum states in the condensates that enable measurement precision surpassing the Standard Quantum Limit derived from the Heisenburg Uncertainty Principle. This work has important applications to precision measurements including atomic clocks, inertial sensing and magnetometry.

Prof. Michael Chapman is a Professor in the School of Physics at the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) in Atlanta, Georgia USA. His research area is atomic physics and quantum optics including laser cooling and trapping of atoms, Bose-Einstein condensation, and quantum information. This research employs lasers to confine and cool atoms to nano-Kelvin temperatures to enable exploration of complex quantum behavior of atoms and photons. Major achievements include the first all-optical Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC), the first storage ring for neutral atoms, and cavity QED research with ultracold atoms.
Biographical sketch: Dr. Michael Chapman received undergraduate degrees from Columbia University in liberal arts (A.B., 1984) and mechanical engineering (B.S., 1985). He worked in industry in managing construction projects and in national laboratories designing superconducting magnets for the SSC and LHC accelerators. He received his Ph.D. in atomic physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1995, and he was a Millikan post-doctoral fellow at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). He became Assistant Professor of Physics at Georgia Tech in 1997, an Associate Professor in 2002 and a Professor in 2003.
