Dr. Min Wu received her B.S.E degree in electrical engineering (Automation) and B.A. degree in economics at Tsinghua University in Beijing, China. As the top student from both programs, she was recognized as an Excellent Graduate in 1996. She then pursued her graduate study at Princeton University and received her Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering in 2001. Since Fall 2001, she has been on the faculty of University of Maryland, College Park, where she is currently a full professor of electrical and computer engineering. Dr. Wu leads the Media and Security Team (MAST) at University of Maryland, with main research interests on information security and forensics and multimedia signal processing. She holds eight U.S.patents and is a co-recipient of two Best Paper Awards from the IEEE Signal Processing Society and EURASIP, respectively. She also received a NSF CAREER award in 2002, a TR100 Young Innovator Award from the MIT Technology Review Magazine in 2004, an ONR Young Investigator Award in 2005, a "40 under 40" IT Innovator Award from Computer World Magazine in 2007, and an IEEE Mac Van Valkenburg Early Career Teaching Award in 2009. She has been elected Vice President - Finance of the IEEE Signal Processing Society (2010-2012) and Vice Chair of the IEEE Technical Committee on Information Forensics and Security, and involved in several other technical committees and journals. This event will consist of two interactive and relatively informal parts. Based on my research and professional involvement, I'll first give an overview on the technical trends of information forensics and security (IFS). IFS consists of a set of emerging and evolving areas where Sherlock Holmes in the digital era meets signal processing. I'll highlight several topic areas that may be of interests for faculty and students with signal/image processing and pattern recognition/machine learning background to engage and contribute. In the second part, I'll use the program at University of Maryland-College Park as an example to introduce graduate programs on signal processing in the U.S. From my experience first as a PhD student and then a faculty member, I'll share some points and tips and take questions. The hope is to help current and prospective graduate students and visiting scholars better utilize the opportunities available, and help faculty identify some beneficial best practices that may be adapted into the programs in China. |
