主题报告 I: Solutions Towards Problems of Scale and Lifetime in BSNs

Abstract: As more functions are added to a Body Sensor Network (BSN) and
as more individuals with BSNs are in close proximity of each other,
wireless communication quality and lifetime issues become paramount.
This talk addresses wireless communication quality by describing
empirical results for multi-function, multi-body mobile situations, and
the novel use of asymmetric communication on a body that employs UWB
from the body sensor devices to the aggregator and narrowband from the
aggregator to the sensor devices. The talk also describes a clean slate
design for BSNs using low power sub-threshold circuit devices. The
solution approach also utilizes cross layer filtering and compression
directed by medical priorities, context and current quality of
communications. The goal is to improve lifetimes by 1-3 orders of
magnitude over today’s solutions. We also discuss a new multi-node BSN
for fall detection that uses a flexible, grammar based solution and that
handles fast and slow falls.


个人简介:John A. Stankovic received his Ph.D. from Brown University and
then served on the faculty of University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He
came to UVa as BP America Professor and Chair of the Department of
Computer Science in 1997. Professor Stankovic is a Fellow of the IEEE, a
Fellow of the ACM, and he served on the Computing Research Association
Board of Directors for nine years. He received an IEEE Award for
Outstanding Technical Contributions and Leadership in Real-Time Systems,
and an Outstanding Scholar Award from the University of Massachusetts.
He also received a Distinguished Faculty award from the School of
Engineering at the University of Virginia. He was Co-Founder and
Co-Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal on Real-Time Systems,
Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Transactions on Parallel and Distributed
Computing, Associate Editor for ACM Transactions on Wireless Sensor
Networks, Associate Editor for ACM Transactions on Embedded Systems, and
Book Series Editor for Real-Time Systems. He has won 4 Best Paper awards.

 


主题报告 II: End-to-End Research and Innovation in Wireless Health

Abstract: Many of the largest information technology industry leaders
today have turned their attention to Wireless Health with wireless
services, new personal hardware products, search technologies that focus
on health and wellness with data and guidance. The impact on individuals
is also unprecedented with individualized, lifetime, health promotion,
services that join consumer fitness and entertainment, disease
management, and a major advance in geriatric care with individualized
guidance and monitoring for individuals in their homes and institutions.

Research in wireless health is radically different from research in
other areas of Computer Science and Engineering. In this talk we will
review key ingredients of a successful research paradigm in Wireless
Health. We use Remote Health Monitoring Systems as a case study.

We will concentrate on Congestive heart failure, a chronic condition
that is a leading cause of hospitalization in the world and a major part
of the rising health care costs. It is the decrease in cardiac function
caused by damage to the heart as a result of a heart attack, chronic
hypertension, or exposure to toxins. The heart’s inability to
effectively pump blood results in fluid accumulation, that manifests in
the symptomatology of hearth failure namely shortness of breath, lower
extremity swelling, chest pain, and limitation of exercise tolerance. We
will review research that led to succesful launch of a large
multi-instituitional clinical trial involving Congestive Heart Failure
Patients.

We will also shows examples of evidence based diabetes and weight-loss
research.

个人简介:Majid Sarrafzadeh (Fellow of IEEE 96) received his Ph.D. in
1987 from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in Electrical
and Computer Engineering. He joined Northwestern University as an
Assistant Professor in 1987. In 2000, he joined the Computer Science
Department at University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA). He is
currently a co-founder and co-director of the UCLA Wireless Health
Institute (WHI) . His recent research interests lie in the area of
Embedded and Reconfigurable Computing with emphasis on healthcare. Dr.
Sarrafzadeh is a Fellow of IEEE. He has served on the technical program
committee of numerous conferences and been a general chair of many of
them. Professor Sarrafzadeh has published approximately 370 papers,
co-authored 5 books, and is a named inventor on 10 US patents

Dr. Sarrafzadeh has collaborated with many industries in the past 25
years including IBM and Motorola and many CAD industries and was the
architect of the physical design subsystem of Monterey Design Systems –
Synopsys acquired the company. He was a co-founder of Hier Design, Inc.
Hier Design was acquired by Xilinx in 2004. He has recently co-founded
Medisens and BioAssyst: both companies in the area of Wireless Health.
