In this talk, the presenter will briefly discuss the history of moden molecular microbial ecology, which is a relatively young discipline in science. Recent advances in molecular based microbial ecology will be discussed, including metagenomics, stable isotope probing techniques and Raman spectroscopy in microbial ecology. Furthermore, the need for pure culture isolates in today's microbial ecology and recent advance in new cultivation techniques will be mentioned.
