Renewable energy has the potential to simultaneously reduce harmful emissions and improve security of supply.  This presentation will concentrate on renewable energy for the bulk production of electricity.  The renewable resources will be introduced and some characteristics will be highlighted and compared.  These comparisons are limited as they do not take into account the need to harvest this energy via the electricity network (i.e. the grid) and the associated technical issues of integration of these renewable resources.  Variable renewable resources such as wind, wave and solar pose particular challenges due to the need to maintain real time supply demand balance i.e. frequency control.  These issues will be developed further and the need for reserves and flexible plant will be discussed.  In addition the impact of cycling on thermal plant will be quantified.  The critical need for transmission development will be highlighted and optimal transmission planning techniques will be introduced.

报告人简介:
Mark O'Malley is the Professor of Electrical Engineering at University College Dublin (UCD), founder and Director of the Electricity Research Centre (http://erc.ucd.ie ) an industry supported research group. He has received two Fulbright awards, is a Fellow of IEEE and a Member of the Royal Irish Academy. He is recognized as a world leading authority on grid integration of renewable energy and he is actively involved in many different international bodies and organizations advising on this topic.  These include the International Energy Agency, European Research Council, European Academy of Sciences Advisory Council, Utility Wind Interest Group (UWIG), US Department of Energy, US National Renewable Energy Laboratory and the Energy Foundation.
