According to Moore’s Law, Integrated circuit density doubles every 18 months - a year and a half. This has happened for roughly the last 35 years. In 2002 at ISSCC, one of the largest IC design conferences, Dr. Hwang forecasted a paradigm shift from a PC-centric era to a mobile and digital consumer era. He predicted doubling the density, specifically the density of memory chips each year, so-called New Memory Growth Model, which is often called as Hwang’s Law. Thanks to his leadership, in 2004 Samsung Electronics joined the $10 Billion-Net-Profit-Club, the largest net profit in history. There are only 10 companies that belong to this club, and Samsung was the first and only electronics company to join the $10 Billion-Net-Profit Club. Around 70% of the success was attributed to the semiconductor division at that time.
“Fusion” or “Convergence” - the merging of IT, BT, NT on the silicon technology platform, has become the main trend for future industries. In 2006, he announced “Fusion Technology” at the IEDM, one of the largest semiconductor conferences, as Hwang’s 2nd Ladder. Now, all digital devices are moving towards an integrated form as he predicted 6 years ago. The ultimate future that we are currently pursuing is the “SMARTOPIA”, which is located on the peak of three ladders that he will share during the talk. Hopefully, all the attendees may share a vision of what the “SMARTOPIA” might look like in the future, and what initiatives the world is currently undertaking to climb up to Hwang’s 3rd Ladder.
Besides, he will share lots of interesting and dramatic hidden stories about close relationship with four inspirations of his life, Andy Grove, William Shockley, Gordon Moore and Steve Jobs. He will also talk about the productive collaboration between China and Korea. He firmly believes that especially basic technology of China and application technology of Korea promise to be a good combination, and thus each other’s strength will create the best “win-win” synergy. |
