清华大学曾经是中国现代比较文学的主要发源地，许多中国比较文学界的先驱者，如王国维、梁启超、吴宓、梁实秋等，均曾在这里任教，蜚声海内外的比较文学学术大师钱钟书、季羡林、杨周翰和王佐良也曾先后在这里求学或任教。此外在这里任教的还有现代英国新批评派的代表人物理查兹和燕卜荪。改革开放以来，清华大学的校友和教授更是为中国当代比较文学的复兴作出了重要的贡献。校友钱钟书先生于1983年率先在北京倡导主持了第一届中美比较文学双边讨论会，当时的中方代表团团长王佐良教授就曾是清华大学外文系的校友，之后于1987年率中国比较文学代表团出席在美国举办的第二届中美比较文学双边讨论会的中方团长则是曾在西南联大任教的杨周翰教授。更为值得欣慰的是主持2001年、2006年和2010年第三届、第四届和第五届中美比较文学双边讨论会的中方代表团团长是本中心主任王宁教授。

在清华大学大力发展文科并力求使之跻身国内一流并在国际上产生重要影响的进程中，比较文学与文化研究中心于2001年由人文社会科学学院批准成立，后来经过学校文科处的审核备案。作为挂靠在人文社会科学学院的一个跨院（系、所）的学术跨学科研究机构，中心的办公地点设在外文系，由外文系学术委员会主任兼外国语言文学一级学科博士点总负责人王宁教授担任中心主任。2005年和新闻与传播学院联合建立校级科研机构——清华大学比较文学与文化研究中心。中心聘请了国内外著名学者佛克马、乐黛云等任顾问。一些蜚声海内外的比较文学和文学理论大师，如弗雷德里克·詹姆逊、希利斯·米勒、佳亚特里·斯皮瓦克、霍米·巴巴、迈克尔·霍奎斯特、乔纳森·卡勒等，应聘担任客座教授。

中心成立十年来，在学科建设方面取得了突飞猛进的发展，2001年开始在中国语言文学学科下招收比较文学与世界文学专业硕士研究生，并在英语语言文学专业下招收中西比较文学方向的硕士研究生。2004年分别在英语语言文学专业和中国现代文学专业下招收中外文学理论比较和中外文学思潮比较方向的博士研究生，2006年起开始在中国语言文学一级学科下独立招收比较文学与世界文学专业的博士研究生，2011年期开始在外国语言文学一级学科下设立比较文学与文化研究方向，并接受国内外访问学者和博士后研究人员。

比较文学与文化研究中心自成立以来，十分重视国际学术交流，中心成员经常到国外名牌大学访问研究或讲学，实际上代表中国比较文学界在国际学术界发言。目前本中心已经和亚洲、非洲、欧洲、北美、南美和澳洲三十多所大学的比较文学和文化研究中心或研究所建立了广泛的学术交流和合作关系, 先后主持承办国际、国内学术会议20多次。其中在国内外产生较大影响的学术会议或论坛包括翻译理论和阐释文化学术研讨会（2001）、第三届中美比较文学双边讨论会（2001）、清华-哈佛后殖民理论高级论坛（2002）、全球化与文化论坛（2002）、易卜生与中国：走向一种美学建构国际研讨会（2002）、全球化与文学研究论坛（2003）、流散现象与流散写作研讨会（2003）、“批评探索：理论的终结？”国际研讨会（2004）、德里达与中国：解构批评与思考学术研讨会（2004）等、第四届中美比较文学双边讨论会(2006)。并协办了在上海交通大学举办的第五届中美比较文学双边讨论会（2010）、在北京大学举办的汉语写作的世界意义国际研讨会（2010）以及在北京语言大学举办的中国比较文学学会第九届年会（2008）等。

    本中心目前的主要研究方向为：现当代中西文学理论与思潮比较，文化研究，后现代与后殖民批评研究，全球化语境下的跨文化传播，中国当代传媒文化研究，翻译研究的文化转向，比较文学史研究，全球化问题研究，流散文学与文化研究等。由本中心成员指导的硕士和博士论文大多涉及上述课题。

Tsinghua University was once a major cradle of China’s comparative literature, where a number of distinguished pioneers worked, such as Wang Guowei, Liang Qichao, Wu Mi and Liang Qichao. And such eminent comparatists like Qian Zhongshu, Ji Xianlin, Yang Zhouhan and Wang Zuoliang either studied or worked here. Those who taught in the University include I.A.Richards and William Empson, two of the eminent representatives of the New Criticism. Since China’s reform and opening up to the outside world, Tsinghua’s alumni and professors have contributed even more to the renaissance of China’s comparative literature studies. In 1983, Qian Zhongshu took the initiative of chairing the first Sino-American Symposium on Comparative Literature in Beijing, and Wang Zuoliang headed the Chinese delegation for the event. In 1987, Yang Zhouhan led the Chinese delegation to attend the second SASCL in the United States. What is more important is, Wang Ning, Director of the Center, headed the Chinese delegation to attend the third, fourth and fifth SASCL in China and the United States.

As an interdisciplinary research institute, the Center was founded in 2001, with its members from the School of Humanities and Social Sciences and that of Journalism and Communication, and with its office in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures and Wang Ning as its director ever since. Douwe Fokkema, the late European comparatist, and Yue Daiyun were invited to function as its advisors. Such international prestigious scholars as Fredric Jameson, J.Hillis Miller, Gayatri Spivak, Homi Bhabha, Michael Holquist and Jonathan Culler have been appointed as honorary guest professors.

Since its founding, the Center has been playing an important role in the University’s humanities. Combining comparative literature studies with cultural studies, the Center has also been playing a pioneering role in China’s cultural studies. There is both a graduate program in comparative literature and world literature under the comprehensive discipline of Chinese language and literature and one in Chinese-Western comparative criticism under the discipline of foreign languages and literatures. The Center also receives applications for post-doctoral and visiting scholarships or fellowships.

    The Center pays particular attention to international academic exchange, with its members lecturing or doing research in various international prestigious universities and speaking on behalf of China’s comparative literature and cultural studies. It has established academic exchanges with more than 30 international prestigious universities and sponsored over 20 high-leveled international conferences or forums, such as the International Conference on Translating Theory and Interpreting Culture (2001), The Third Sino-American Symposium on Comparative Literature (2001), Tsinghua-Harvard Forum on Postcolonialism (2002), The Forum on Globalization and Culture (2002), The International Conference on Ibsen and China (2002), The International Conference on Critical Inquiry: Ends of Theory (2004), The Forum on Derrida and Deconstructive Criticism (2004), The Fourth and Fifth Sino-American Symposiums on Comparative Literature (2006) (2010).

The current research projects undertaken by the members of the Center include comparative studies of modern and contemporary Chinese and Western critical theories, cultural studies, postmodern and postcolonial studies, cross-cultural communication in the global context, contemporary Chinese media and communication studies, globalization studies, cultural perspectives on translation studies, comparative literary history, diasporic studies, etc.
