Abstract:
ZrB2 - SiC nano-powder mixtures and nano-HfB2 powder were synthesized. By the reactions of ZrSi2, B4C and C, a mixture of SiC and ZrB2 particles finer than 100 nm in size was obtained after a strong exothermic reaction. The particle size could be decreased further to 20nm by using ZrSiO4 instead of ZrSi2. The important factors to control particle size, the optimum processing conditions and the synthetic mechanisms of the nano-powders will be discussed. The synthesized nano-powders were sintered using spark plasma sintering. Dense ZrB2 and HfB2 with fine microstructure could be obtained as a result. By the optimization of process the densification temperature could be decreased to 1450oC – 1600oC without adding sintering additives.
