This talk will briefly describe several research activities associated with projects being carried out at the ACIS laboratory of the University of Florida. The projects include the iDigBio project (idibio.org) which is implementing a storage cloud for digitized records of all biological collections in US academic museums, the FutureGrid (futuregrid.org) project which is deploying a distributed testbed for research on cloud, grid and HPC computing and the Center for Cloud and Autonomic Computing (nsfcac.org) which conducts industry-university projects on management and advanced applications of datacenters and cloud computing systems. In the context of these and other projects, this talk will also present research work done in virtual networking, virtual machine migration and fault-tolerant Hadoop systems.

José A.B. Fortes is the AT&T Eminent Scholar and Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Florida where he founded and is the Director of both the Advanced Computing and Information Systems Laboratory and the multi-university NSF Industry-University Cooperative Research Center on Autonomic Computing. José Fortes is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) professional society and a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). He was a Distinguished Visitor of the IEEE Computer Society from 1991 till 1995. José Fortes is on the Editorial Boards of Cluster Computing: The Journal of Networks, Software Tools and Applications, the International Journal on Parallel Programming and the Journal of VLSI Signal Processing. He is also a past member of the Editorial Boards of IEEE Transactions on Parallel and Distributed Systems, the ACM Journal on Emerging Technologies in Computing Systems, and the Journal of Parallel and Distributed Computing.
